I go to the Theatre to see a piece directed by Wajdi Mouawad without knowing anything about it; the luxury of not having prejudices or expectations. The new space is claustrophobic and people in the last row had to move, otherwise it would prevent the theatre staff From doing their job. One more fabulous and functional architectural work on the list of great achievements, this time by Jean Guy Lecat, Francisco Fontanals and Emilio Esteras. For the first ten minutes, I doubt whether I should leave: a histrionic character yells phrases rapidly. I feel dislocated and uncomfortable, but I stay. This is one of the best plays I’ve ever seen: I have no words. The text by Wajdi Mouawad is a stunning mastery. The theater company with Gérald Gagnon, Jocelyn Lagarrigue, Isabelle Leblanc, Julie McClemens, Ginette Morin, Mireille Naggar, Valeryi Pankov, Isabelle Roy and Richard Thériault has a solvency, versatility and quality overwhelming. The costumes and scenery by Isabelle Larivière are magnificent, the garden watered dazzles. Eric Champoux’s lighting is superb. The music by Michel F. Côté is marvelous and I fall in love with the piece played with old toy pianos. The tone is superlative, but it is absolutely deserved. The histrionic character becomes the irresistible figure, for friendship and to keep a promise persists in breaking the protagonist’s silence. The Pandora’s Box is slowly opened: lightnings, thunders, hell, aberrant violence amid a civil war and the subsequent silence in exile. I feel strong emotions, dizziness, shock, tears that I can not suppress. It is an odyssey (Oedipus, Antigone) to an unknown past, which requires accepting unbearable realities, but it allows a second chance. Remembering can be painful and yet, this play is a toast to life.
